Attention Animation Writers!

by leticia on October 27, 2010

8th November 2010

The call for writers is now closed. Thanks to everyone who contacted us, we will be in touch soon.

We’re looking for writers for a new animation series in development. They need to have some experience at writing for children’s animation and have a knack at comedy (specially slapstick!) and action-adventure. The show is targeted at 7-11 year-olds.

If you are one or know one, please get in touch: hello [at] whackala.com

MIP and beyond…

by Paul on October 25, 2010

We’re back from Mipcom for 2 weeks now and boy are we tired. We have been catching up on catching up, work, contacts emails, other projects… and sleep.

It was our first trip to the famous and humongous international entertainment content market; we had tons of meetings and tons of…..

Coffee coffee coffee

And, we have to say, not one of them was bad, for which we’re thankful, given that we were downing them from 8am to 7pm while pitching, talking, networking, and walking between meetings…

Bright and early... waiting for the morning shuttle bus outside our hotel

Here’s Paul all dressed up in media chic outside the main building where it was all happening, the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès

notice the poster behind: 'the story that originally starred Salma Hayek...' winner pitch

And a close-up, why not, he looks good

We pitched our “Squinky and the Witch” and “Crime Fighting Foley Monkeys” animation shows to great responses, looking for distributors, co-production partners and we also had meetings with broadcasters -here’s Leticia being very subtle about her wishes

A prayer to the BBC

The Palais’ basement was full of rows upon rows of stands from companies from producers to broadcasters, distributors, licensing companies, etc…

Colour overload

The entrance to the endless basement

Posing with a celebrity

We were going as part of the European MEDIA umbrella stand, which were up on the airy 4th & 5th floors. The stand staff were absolute stars, helpful, charming, absolute saviours for us newcomers!

Next to our flyers at the MEDIA stand

The view from the 5th floor by the MEDIA umbrella stands

As you can see we actually didn’t take any photos of the staff or the actual space up there, since most of our photo taking was on the very last day, when we thought we should have some part professional/part tourist mementos, but we did do some after hours networking and party going, like the opening cocktail party at the Martinez Hotel…

at which we lasted 15 minutes! not built for queuing...

And we had a meeting in a yacht!

Where the hell is it...?

Ahhhhh!

Ahhhhh

And on our last day of Palais and surroundings trotting, we attended the Wrap-up cross-media session … which was very interesting but Leticia was so exhausted she had a sneaky shut-eye at the back… Paul was paying full attention though

Conference of one

Conference of one

So… what now? Well, we’re following up on that interest and those contacts to get our animation projects going and we’ll update the blog as soon as we have some solid news on those, but also, check the Forty Foot film site and After The Revolution for updates on recent and coming festival screenings and other news with our two documentaries…

Bye bye for now!

Leticia & Paul

Whackala at MIPCOM 2010

by leticia on September 25, 2010

Whackala is going to be attending what they call “the world’s entertainment content market” for the first time in a couple of weeks. MIPCOM takes place in Cannes on 4-8 of October, but we can assure you it’ll mean a lot less glamour and considerably a lot more running around than the famous film festival: a sea of suits, a lot of coffee, a lot of deals -hopefully- and nectes -as they call in Mexico networking contacts, but there will also be meetings by the sea and in yachts (!), discovering of great potential new colleagues and exciting ideas, and, of course, a cocktail party or two.

Whackala was accepted to be part of the MEDIA Umbrella Stand, with up to two hundred other independent European producers and also distributors. We’ll be focusing on our animation slate and are taking three projects to find co-production, finance and distributors:

Our already familiar magical preschool duo Squinky and The Witch:

Our new series in development Crime Fighting Foley Monkeys:

And also in development, our musical alphabet show in Spanish and English The Whacky Alphabet:

So, if you’re going too, and want to hear more about these, or simply meet up for one of those many coffees -or a cocktail!- and a chat, drop us a line: hello[at]whackala.com

If you’re registered, you can read more about these projects and us in the mipcom online database.
